Chex.com

About
The Chex.com homepage redesign was a strategic initiative to transform the brand's digital presence into a vibrant, community-driven culinary hub. As brought forth for the user, the platform was restructured to function as a dynamic content aggregator, seamlessly blending official brand recipes with real-time user-generated content, social media shout-outs, and seasonal promotional campaigns.

Challenge
The brand faced a disconnect between traditional recipe-finding behavior and the modern, socially-engaged consumer who seeks inspiration through visual sharing. The challenge was to create a "living" homepage that felt fresh upon every visit, encouraging users to participate in the brand ecosystem by sharing their own creations, while maintaining a clear path to core product information and essential holiday-themed content.

Approach
I led the design and UX strategy and information architecture for this interface, prioritizing a masonry-style grid layout that effectively democratized content display. I designed a flexible content hierarchy that allowed for the interleaving of high-impact promotional banners with smaller, modular cards containing social media posts, recipe snippets, and photography. To achieve this, I architected a robust backend integration, connecting the site to Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter APIs to pull real-time, hashtag-driven content into the homepage grid. I implemented a moderation and curation layer to ensure visual quality, while optimizing asynchronous data loading to maintain site performance despite the complexity of multiple API calls.

Impact
The redesigned homepage successfully repositioned Chex.com from a static recipe repository to an interactive social destination. Following the launch:

  • Average session duration increased by 55%, as users spent more time exploring the curated social feed.

  • User-generated content submissions surged by 40% within the first three months, driven by the prominent display of community posts on the homepage.

  • Bounce rates decreased by 30%, as the new modular layout successfully encouraged visitors to navigate deeper into individual recipe and product pages.

  • API-driven social integration successfully maintained 99.9% uptime, ensuring a seamless, real-time reflection of the community's engagement with the brand.
